Firefighters battled a blaze that broke out in a field in south Norfolk.

Emergency services were called at 4.12pm to the scene in Heywood, near Diss by 4.44pm.

Seventeen fire crews from across Norfolk attended, including from as far as King's Lynn , Mundesley and Reepham - almost 50 miles away.

Teams from Diss, Long Stratton, Hingham, Hethersett, Harleston, East Harling, Dereham, Sprowston, Attleborough and Wymondham also were involved.

Crews used hose reel jets and hand appliances to extinguish the fire.

By 5.46pm the stop message was received and no more resources were needed.

It is believed an electrical pylon caught fire, causing the field to catch alight.

The blaze spread quickly across the field and has set alight to a nearby wooded area.

Power was cut to 900 homes across eight postcodes due to the blaze damaging overhead high voltage electrical cables.

Electricity had been restored to homes by 10pm.

Video footage shows a farmer frantically ploughing the field to try to stop the spread of the fire by driving across ground yet to be caught alight.

Smoke billowed into the sky as it continued to spread across the parched field amid a day of extreme heat.

Fire crews have combatted a high number of fires across the region during the high temperatures experienced in Norfolk over the past two weeks.
