Broadland spray specialist Jim Bailey has been named regional Syngenta Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year.

Mr Bailey is responsible for spraying on 500 hectares of cropping at Clarke's Farm, Martham, for James Chapman and Partners.

The Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year awards, sponsored by Syngenta, with Farmers Weekly, were made by Shadow agriculture minister James Paice at the International Sprays and Sprayers event, held as part of Cereals 2006 at Nocton, Lincolnshire.

The diverse range of crops managed by Mr Bailey, including cereals, sugar beet, peas and potatoes, calls for lots of skills and knowledge to achieve accurate, safe spray application.

Although his Sands self-propelled sprayer is more than 11 years old, it is capable of reliable and highly accurate application.

He also highlighted the value of a tidy and efficient spray store manage-ment system, which saved time when spraying and money through better stock control. He even has a polite notice on the spray shed walls to ensure that deliveries are stacked neatly where needed, saving time in avoiding moving cases around.

Mr Bailey is a member of the National Register of Sprayer Operators.
