An agricultural lawyer is gearing up for a gruelling coast-to-coast cycling challenge across Costa Rica – with a personal motivation to raise money and awareness for a farm safety charity.
Sarah Ellero, a solicitor in the agriculture team at Leathes Prior, based in Norwich's Cathedral Close, said she had friends and clients who had been affected by farming accidents.
So the 26-year-old is using her cycling challenge to help the Farm Safety Foundation, a charity dedicated to reducing accidents among young farmers.
'I have known both friends and clients to be affected by farm accidents, with life-changing results,' she said. 'So I'm very conscious of the need to raise awareness of farm safety to try and bring home its importance.
'The foundation aims to change attitudes about taking risks and educate young people so as to prevent future accidents – raising awareness is just as important as raising money in this case.'
Her seven-day adventure, which starts on November 4, will take her across 460km of hilly volcanic terrain between the central American country's Pacific and Caribbean coasts, spending up to 11 hours a day in the saddle in temperatures of over 30 degrees.
'This is my first big cycle challenge, and there are not many hills in Norfolk to train on, so I might not be so well prepared,' she said. 'I think the terrain will be the most difficult thing – and also sitting in the saddle for so many hours a day.'
The journey is self-funded, with all donations going to the charity. For more details or to donate, click here.
