Matt Howard and James Tucker were both made partners with chartered accountants Larking Gowen before the age of 30 and represent the new generation that will help take the profession forward.

Their career paths also reflect the different options you can follow. Matt Howard studied accountancy at the UEA and soon realised he did not want to become one. Luckily he came across, by accident, the whole area of insolvency which appealed to him.

"Traditional accountancy was not what I was looking for as a career,” said Matt. “But insolvency was, although to become a qualified Insolvency Practitioner is a lengthy task with a series of very challenging exams which only around 50 per cent pass.

"It was the legal work mixed with financial advice that appealed, covering such areas as liquidation: receivership, administration and personal insolvency.

“It can be very challenging and covers both personal and business clients who are often in emotional turmoil. But it can also be very rewarding, especially when you are able to save a business and people's jobs.”

James meanwhile became the youngest partner appointed in Larking Gowen's 120 year history at the age of 28.

Now he has been charged with developing the firm's new Colchester office.

"It is an exciting challenge and I am pleased to be able to take an active role in building up business in Colchester and North Essex,” he said. "I am relishing meeting fellow professionals and potential clients and to be able to tell them about the tremendous level of talent and experience we have in the firm.”

Both men firmly believe accountancy is an attractive career.

"Most firms will support you while you are studying for exams and once completed you have a worldwide recognised qualification," said James.
