A man has been banned from entering a Norwich shopping centre after admitting stealing DVDs worth hundreds of pounds from HMV.

Paul Carruthers, 42, targeted the entertainment store in Chantry Place on two separate occasions in January.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told on January 14 he had walked out of the store with several discs of TV shows and films worth a total of £355.

Just over a week later he returned to the store again and stole numerous other items valued at almost £240.

On both occasions he almost immediately tried to sell the stolen DVDs by passing them off as his own at a second hand shop just three minutes walk away.

Carruthers, of Northfields in Norwich, pleaded guilty to two charges of shop theft and fraud by false representation.

Rob New, mitigating, said he has a long history of similar thefts and urged magistrates to order a pre-sentence report.

He will be sentenced on April 9. Magistrates granted conditional bail banning him from entering Chantry Place and the CeX shop on St Stephen’s Street.
