A man stopped by police was found with a jacket belonging to a Norfolk prison among a haul of stolen items in a rucksack, a court has heard.

David Dixey, 52, was arrested by police in relation to another matter while walking along Riverside Walk in Thetford on December 23 this year.

When they searched his rucksack he was found to have a prison jacket belonging to HMP Wayland, near Watton, as well as epaulettes and other items.

Josephine Jones, prosecuting at Norwich Magistrates Court, said a Nike coat, beanie hat and iPhone charger were among some of the other items found in the rucksack.

He had been seen acting suspiciously in Stuart Drive, Thetford and had been trying car door handles including one vehicle from which he "took a number of items".

Dixey, of no fixed abode, appeared at court today when he admitted theft offences and interference with a Honda Accord vehicle.

He also admitted being in breach of post-sentence supervision in that he failed to attend an appointment with probation.

Lucy Brakewell, mitigating, said her client said he was "sorry" for the theft offences which happened after he had been drinking and "made the wrong decision" with drink having got the better of him.

She said he had been previously released from custody with nothing and has issues with alcohol which "exacerbates his offending".
