A country hall near the Norfolk coast has been named one of the UK's "most majestic" stately homes to visit this Christmas.

Holkham Hall was featured in the Sunday Times' list of the seven best estates to see this festive season, noted for being "especially lovely" when decorated for the holiday.

Each hall was chosen for offering "dazzling light shows, frost fairs or sleigh rides" and ranged from Wales to the Scottish border.

The Times' said of Holkham Hall: "This Palladian mansion has a rather forbidding exterior but, like all the best Christmas presents, it's what’s on the inside that counts.

"Marvel at the sight of Marble Hall with its 50ft dome ceiling and ornate alabaster walls kitted out with garlanded trees, before exploring the grandest room, the Saloon, a vision in red velvet.

"Look out for Rudolph among the estate's herd of fallow deer before retreating to hotel-restaurant the Victoria, one of several accommodation options on-site."

The village of Holkham appeared on BBC Two's Villages by the Sea programme earlier this month when presenter and archaeologist Ben Robinson delved into its medieval past.
