A village on the Norfolk-Suffolk border was officially the coldest place in the UK last night, as temperatures plummetted across the country.

Meteorologist Dan Holley reported that Santon Downham, in Thetford Forest, hit a low of -6.6C overnight.

This also made it the coldest November night in the region since 2016.

The weather expert also reported that Marham, in Norfolk, saw temperatures dip to -5.7C while Houghton Hall recorded lows of -3.7C.

The news comes as the Met Office warns of snow and ice across the county tonight and tomorrow morning, with rain and wintry showers leading to icy patches on roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Drivers are advised to take care on the roads and to avoid travelling in heavy snow and icy conditions where possible.

Norfolk's fleet of gritters hit the streets yesterday ahead of the frosty front, which will see 2,200 miles of road treated throughout the season.

Some £1.3m was spent on 14 new gritting vehicles which were used for the first time last winter and 27 new gritters are joining the fleet this winter at a cost of £3.2m.
