A body part found on a beach has been confirmed as belonging to a man who went missing nearly two years ago.

Police have said that the body part found in Winterton is from missing man Pawel Martyniak, who disappeared from Gorleston in 2021.

The 21-year-old could not be traced despite extensive checks and searches.

The part has been provisionally identified as belonging to Mr Martyniak following forensic examination, pending formal coroner proceedings.

The death is not believed to be suspicious and police would not identify what part of the body was found.

Mr Martyniak, from Carrel Road in Gorleston, was last seen in the area at around 6pm on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

He was reported missing by his family in the early hours of Wednesday, December 1.

He was later seen by a witness in Victoria Road heading in the direction of the seafront.

The Martyniak family and Norfolk Constabulary have issued a number of pleas since his disappearance.

Posters were distributed widely in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Colchester and officers were deployed as far as London to assist with possible sightings.

In November 2022, Mr Martyniak's father said: "It's still a very difficult time, getting worse by the day.

"This has been the most heartbreaking and challenging year of our lives.

"We're still unsure about Pawel’s well-being and we are very concerned he may be injured or unwell.

"We think about him and miss him every passing day."

Mr Martyniak, who was born in Poland and moved to the UK in 2004, studied at Notre Dame High School in Norwich and East Norfolk Sixth Form College.

He later attended the University of Essex to study business but decided to leave midway through his first year.

He spent much of his time at home reading philosophy, attending St Peter's Catholic Church in Gorleston and was also a lifeguard during the summer holidays in Hemsby.
