Plans for a town's fourth Greggs have been given the go-ahead despite objectors saying it already has enough of the sausage roll giant.

Developer Step 6 has been given planning permission for a drive-thru restaurant and takeaway as part of proposals for land known as Morston Point, on the outskirts of King's Lynn.

There are also proposals for a hotel, pub and Lidl supermarket on parts of the site, at the junction of Green Yard Way and the main A149 bypass.

Both North Runcton Parish Council and King's Lynn Civic Society objected to the Greggs.

The council said: "The parish council are disappointed to see a drive-thru Greggs proposed for this site - an amenity that we feel will offer little to the local economy.

"We note there is already a Greggs little more than 1,000 metres to the west on Hansa Road.

"The council note local and national concern about obesity, traffic congestion, plastic packaging and litter.

"We imgine this proposal will exacerbate all these problems locally and therefore suggest it will not constitute sustainable development."

The civic society said the development would "fail to deliver the kinds of economic benefits that were originally intended".

It added: "Certainly a drive-thru Greggs seems unlikely to provide any positive benefits for our town – especially as we already have three Greggs outlets, one on the Hardwick Industrial Estate."

But the restaurant and takeaway already had outline planning permission.

And a planning officer's report said: "Whilst of no particular architectural merit, the scale, mass and design of the proposed building are appropriate for its industrial/commercial location and are typical of a drive-thru facility."

Plans to develop Morston Point were first revealed almost 10 years ago, with claims they could bring 650 jobs.

While the site has outline permission, interest has so far been slow.
