Store chiefs revealed the move would safeguard local jobs.

A household name is set to disappear from the high street in Cromer.

The Co-op has confirmed it is set to take over the town centre Budgens store.

It says the move would safeguard local jobs, with 23 staff employed in the food outlet and five at the in-house Post Office transferring over.

The deal is subject to the approval of the Competition and Markets Authority.

Alistair Smith, acquisition manager for the Co-op in the region, said: 'The Co-op is moving forwards with a clear purpose and momentum and our acquisitions programme is fundamental to the success of this strategy.

'Last year, the Co-op opened more than 100 new stores and we plan to open a similar amount in 2017. Subject to approval, we look forward to the opportunity to serve the Cromer community.'

The Co-op in High Street, Cromer, is not linked to the Central England Co-operative in Middlebrook Way, Cromer. And, with both outlets currently trading in same town previously, that is not expected to change.

'A new Co-op would safeguard local jobs at the store and create a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.

'The Co-op would also bring a funding boost to local good causes through its new membership scheme sees members receive a 5% reward on purchases of own-branded products and services, with a further 1% going to local causes and groups to make a difference in the community.'
