Head to the small screen for a feast of entertainment this weekend and next week from The Durrells to the Marcella finale, see parents go back to school in Class of Mum and Dad and take a look at the fillies and fashion on show at the Grand National
Saturday: Britain's Most Historic Towns: Roman Chester, Channel 4, 8pm:
In this unique take on British history, Professor Alice Roberts explores Britain's rich and varied past through the stories of individual towns (they're cities, but let's not quibble). She'll be in Tudor Norwich on April 28, but first she's in Chester, Britain's most Roman town. She enjoys an authentic Roman feast, heads deep underground to check out an extraordinary archaeological find and explores a radical theory regarding the Romans' plans for Chester (Hollyoaks?).
Sunday: The Durrells, ITV, 8pm:
Louisa has an even fuller house this week as Larry invites two friends to stay, Prince Jeejeebuoy and Captain Creech. Louisa immediately begins to clean the house in preparation for his arrival, whilst Spiro offers to pick up champagne for the family's special guest (she's less smitten with the drunken captain). What with Margo's soap sculpting, Leslie's burglar shooting system and Gerry's wall of stick insects, finding out that the Prince isn't quite what he seems will be quite pedestrian in comparison.
Monday: Marcella, ITV, 9pm:
It's the last episode of this laugh-a-minute police procedural with added fugues and Marcella finds that that killer has kidnapped someone very close to home. In addition to a massive fight, some revelations and a showdown, there's this to look forward to: 'Marcella tries to confront the demons surrounding her fugues. But what she discovers in hypnosis excavates the foundations of her very core and lead her to question whether she can ever be herself again.' Let's hope not, I fancy series three.
Tuesday: Class of Mum and Dad, Channel 4, 8pm:
Primary school education has changed dramatically in recent years, and in this brand new series a class of parents are going to experience what it's like for their kids as they go back to school. For half a term, these parents will study the year six curriculum alongside their own children. They will have the same regime, school uniform, homework, school dinners, participate in PE, art, music and dance lessons as well as face the same discipline if they misbehave. Wish fulfilment for any child.
Wednesday: The Secret Helpers, BBC1, 8pm:
This week welcoming the support and advice of worldly-wise helpers are 70-year-old widow Lesley, and restaurant owner Lauren. Lesley was married to Roy for 43 years and she was his main carer after he got ill. Four years after he passed away, Lesley feels she can put herself first and think what she really wants from life. She would like to find love again but this time she would like to date a woman. Can the sages help her regain her confidence, come out to her friends, and navigate this new unfamiliar world? Lauren, 29, has a new restaurant business and is struggling – she hopes the helpers can help her be a better boss and turn her restaurant around.
Thursday: Location, Location, Location, Channel 4, 8pm:
This week, Kirstie Allsopp's catching up with two sets of house-hunters who were both hoping for a home near the coast. In 2013, Phil Spencer helped retirees Peggy and Jon navigate the Norfolk coastline to find a forever home, and two years earlier Kirstie was searching along the English Riviera for local couple Jamie and Sam who needed help spending an inheritance wisely. Now, Kirstie's back - and finds there have been huge changes in their homes - and their lives.
Friday: The Grand National Festival Live: Ladies' Day, ITV, 2pm:
Ladies' Day features four Grade One races including the Betway Novices' Hurdle (2.20pm), Betway Mildmay Novices' Chase (2.50pm), JLT Melling Chase (3.25pm) and the Doom Bar Sefton Novices' Hurdle (4.40pm), plus the professionals are in action over the big fences in the Randox Health Topham Chase (4.05pm). More importantly, the attendees at Aintree's Ladies' Day are always a sight to behold for all the right and wrong reasons.
