Sheringham residents urged to pack a picnic to mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

A day of alfresco entertainment is being planned in Sheringham to mark the Diamond Jubilee - and residents are now being encouraged to roll up a rug and pack a hamper to join in the fun.

To celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne the town is hosting The Big Picnic, which is expected to be the largest single event Sheringham has ever staged.

Dancing, singing, games, children's competitions and a fancy dress pageant will be among the entertainment and activities on offer during the day, that will be opened with a combined church service.

Live music from four home grown bands, including the Sheringham Shantymen and costumed four-piece act the Yow Yows, will close the party in the evening.

Sheringham Town Council is organising the Big Picnic on Sunday, June 3 and said the plans have been received warmly by residents.

Malcolm Birtwell, from the jubilee working party, said: 'We've had a couple of public meetings, which have been well attended and had a lot of positive feedback so we're hoping a lot of people turn up.

'It's an opportunity to come together and celebrate the jubilee and celebrate being British and being part of a wonderful local community. And hopefully people will take something away from it to remember.'

The whole event is free, including parking, but residents are asked to bring their own picnics. The day will start at 10.30am with the combined church service followed by entertainment and activities starting at 11.30am.

? The jubilee celebrations will continue on the bank holiday Monday when a beacon will be lit on Beeston Bump to be part of a network of torches lit all round the coast of Britain.
