A new classical music piece by a Gresham's School teacher will be premiered by a community choir.

The Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society will be singing A Lenten Prayer written by the choir's musical director Nathan Waring, head of music at Gresham's Prep School, on Saturday March 28.

It comes just a few months after the society performed the world premiere of Eventide, written by Patrick Hawes in memory of Norfolk First World War heroine Edith Cavell.

The choir performed Eventide alongside the English Chamber Orchestra at Norwich Cathedral in July last year.

A Lenten Prayer will be sung at St Peter's Church in Sheringham with Gresham's organist Lawrence Tao and professional singers Tom Stoddart and Paul Smy.

It is inspired by words about Ash Wednesday.

Society chairman Bob Cumber, 68, from St Nicholas Place, Sheringham, said: 'A Lenten Prayer is a very melodic and beautiful piece of music.'

The society was formed in 1933 and its members come from Sheringham, Cromer, and surrounding villages.

There are currently just over 100 members.

Mr Cumber said anyone could join and the society did not hold auditions.

The choral group sings classical songs from Mozart to modern day creations and practises every Monday at Sheringham High School from 7.30pm-9pm (during term time).

The Sheringham concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £12 in advance or £15 on the door. Call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk
