An intoxicating merry-go-round of comic misunderstandings, Twelfth Night is packed with high comedy, low tricks, riotous frivolity and sparkling wit.

Viola and her brother Sebastian are shipwrecked in Illyria.

Thinking Sebastian dead Viola disguises herself as a boy, becomes page to the lovesick Orsino and is entrusted with carrying his unrequited messages of love to Olivia.

She, thinking Viola a boy, falls passionately in love with him/her.

So begins Shakespeare's ever-popular comedy - an irresistible tale of mistaken identity, wit and wisdom - directed by award-winning Patrick Mason (Dancing at Lughnasa and former Artistic Director of Dublin's Abbey Theatre).

Kelly stars as one of Shakespeare's most complicated comic villains in the production.

Winner of the 2004 Olivier Best Actor Award for his stage performance as Lennie in Of Mice and Men, Kelly is best-known for fronting popular ITV1 series You Bet! and Stars in Their Eyes.

Kelly, who recently announced he is giving up light entertainment forever, spent years fronting popular ITV1 series You Bet! and Stars in Their Eyes.

Now he plans to focus on theatre and television drama.

The actor, whose career was nearly ruined by abuse allegations that were subsequently dropped, is also currently appearing on TV screens as Mr Turvydrop in the BBC's soap opera style adaptation of Dickens's classic Bleak House.

He will also soon be playing the role of a serial killer in a 90-minute crime thriller Cold Blood for ITV1.

The cast of Twelfth Night also includes Honeysuckle Weeks (Sam Stewart in ITV's Foyle's War) and Christopher Benjamin.

Twelfth Night is the fourth production between Theatre Royal Plymouth and Thelma Holt.

Previous collaborations were The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew and Ninagawa's Hamlet in 2004.
