Whenever a film is garnering high critical reception my immediate reaction is to go and see it, however upon watching Sightseers my immediate reaction would probably not be appropriate for this review as Sightseers has to be the most overrated movie of 2012.

Whenever a film is garnering high critical reception my immediate reaction is to go and see it, however upon watching Sightseers my immediate reaction would probably not be appropriate for this review as Sightseers has to be the most overrated movie of 2012.

The film stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram as a couple who go on a caravan holiday to Yorkshire, however this holiday really does take a turn for the worst and this ultimately affects the film in general. For instance in order to have a successful comedy it has to be funny but that's were Sightseers fails the most, it simply isn't funny. On most occasions I prefer dark comedies but this was seriously lacking. I am not a fan of using this phrase but it's rather apparent that all the best parts of this film were in the trailer, so if you didn't find the trailer funny then I wouldn't waste your time with Sightseers as you would certainly dislike it more than me. It's definitely a contender for the most miserable comedy of the decade so far.

In all fairness the two central characters in Sightseers played by Alice Lowe and Steve Oram have a very strong chemistry when on set but it's just a shame that the two are extremely unlikeable from an audience perspective. I found them very one-dimensional and extremely predictable, much like the movie in general as all the film revolves around is the constant formula of location, kill, location, kill and that's essentially all the film is, a seriously dull affair that feels a lot longer that its relatively low running time.

You automatically know you've watched a bad film when the only positive you can draw from your entire experience would be the Yorkshire scenery as it truly is beautiful even if it can be a bit repetitive here and there. However it would be rather harsh to criticise a film on its scenery as it is as I said the only positive thing Sightseers has going for it.

I will admit despite my resentment of Sightseers I did snigger once or twice but when you've been informed by various media outlets that the film is the best British comedy since Four Lions you can't help but complain. How can a film this bad be loved by so many? It's an example of incredibly average film-making and dreadful script-writing. In all honesty if it wasn't for the often gruesome yet over the top death sequences this film would be a 12 in terms of jokes as there's nothing explicit here apart from the odd sex reference, instead the characters decide to talk about things such as being able to fly whilst operating a swing which I understand some may find funny but I on the other hand do not.

Overall I honestly wouldn't bother with Sightseers. The only excuse you should have for watching this is when it is aired on Channel 4 next year, as that's where it should have been on television and definitely not the cinema.
