There is a lot to look forward to at the Norwich Arts Centre this season. Arts correspondent Emma Knights takes a look at the summer line-up.
Music galore and innovative and unusual performances are set to entertain audiences in the new season at Norwich Arts Centre.
The St Benedict's Street venue's new programme for May and June is packed with a colourful mix of events with something for everyone.
Kelly Robb, Norwich Arts Centre's marketing manager, said: 'We're heading into our spring and summer season of events and have some real gems coming to Norwich from reggae to electronica and ragtime to afrobeat.
'There are plenty of events worth venturing down for!'
Music Highlights
May 12 sees the launch of Anti Despair Machine, a new night of indie/alternative bands headlined by rising post-punk quartet Thyla, meanwhile Virginia dream pop band Turnover will take to the stage on May 23 and punk rockers As It Is perform a special acoustic set on May 21 with special guests Dream State.
Music events in June include acts ranging from prolific blues man Lil' Jimmy Reed on June 5 to fiery rock and roll courtesy of Starcrawler on June 22.
Reggae group Misty in Roots will be performing on June 8, while Rival Consoles (a.k.a. London producer Ryan West) will be playing tracks from his new album Persona on June 9. World music collective Anda Union will deliver their magical blend of Mongolian song on June 11 and the following day C.W.Stoneking will perform a mix of gospel blues, Chicago Blues and ragtime.
Benin's Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo will entertain with their unique mixture of soul, funk, afrobeat and more on June 19 and Norwich house/electro duo Sink Ya Teeth will be launching their debut album with a bang on June 21.
Performance Highlights
Norwich Arts Centre has teamed up with Writers' Centre Norwich and Norfolk and Norwich Festival to presents four unique shows over two evenings. May 11 will see writer Rosy Carrick perform Passionate Machine, which is described as an exhilarating story blending fact and fiction, and this will be followed by 'a collision of physical performance and spoken-word poetry set to electronic music' from Hannah Silva.
A few days later, on May 16, Jack Dean will present Nuketown, a performance described as a storytelling and protest art show about cities, public money and the end of life as we know it. Later that evening poets Tim Clare and Mark Grist will ask the audience to choose the direction of their performance in the show Voted Out.
A key point in Norwich's history will be cast into the spotlight on May 14 and 15 when 1549: Kett's Rebellion - a Norwich Arts Centre co-production from theatre-maker Simon Floyd - tells the story of what happened in 16th century Norwich when Robert Kett led a rebellion of the common people.
May 20 sees the inaugural edition of Balloon, a new event from the people behind True Stories Live, and on May 22 Francesca Beard will present the show How to Survive a Post-Truth Apocalypse.
Writer Martin Figura will present two shows on June 20 - Whistle and Dr. Zeeman's Catastrophe Machine - and on June 27 Gary Winters and Claire Hind will present Lost in a Sea of Glass and Tin.
