Bibles dating back to 13th century to go on show in Norwich

A fascinating look at historic Bibles will be on offer at an exhibition at Norfolk Heritage Centre in the Millennium Library, Norwich.

The Christadelphians in Bramerton have a large collection of bibles, including facsimiles of very rare bibles many hundreds of years old, which will be part of the two day exhibition on on April 27 (10am-6pm) and April 28 (9.30am-4pm).

It will be a free opportunity to see the collection and learn a little about how the Bible came down to us in English from the original languages and to other languages.

Amongst the many texts on display will be the Norwich Apocalypse and the Boleyn Wycliffe Bible, which are part of a collection owned by The Norfolk Heritage Centre.

The Apocalypse is beautifully illustrated and dates back to the mid-1200s.

The Wycliffe Bible is handwritten and inscribed faintly on the pages of this 15th century bible are the ancient words which hold the key to its significance.

In beautiful Latin script, it declares: 'liber Iacobi Boolene manens in Blickling', translated as 'James Boleyn's book, dwelling in Blickling'.

This hand-written manuscript, once owned by Anne Boleyn's uncle illustrates links to the Norfolk family at the centre of the upheavals which shaped England's religion and monarchy.

The Wycliffe Bible will be shown for an hour in the mornings and the Apocalypse for an hour in the afternoon – exact times are available at www.b-c.org.ukThe Bibles will be on display with free handouts and study material. The group are also holding a seminar on the 'Good News of the Bible' at the Guildhall, on Guildhall Hill, Norwich, on May 9 at 7.45pm. Free admission, all welcome.
