A long-running village drama group will be putting their own twist on the popular legend of King Arthur.

The Aldborough Players are well known for their inventive and fun pantomimes and this year's Excalibur – The Greatest Sword on Earth is set to continue the trend.

Excalibur is loosely based on the legend of King Arthur, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table and will be performed at the Community Centre in Aldborough from Thursday February 6 - Saturday February 8 at 7.30pm.

The show will tell the story of the pulling of the sword from the stone, the instigation of the round table and the sibling rivalry between Arthur and his wicked, scheming sister Morgan Le Fey.

Arthur, played by Jon Winnett, is a cross between Braveheart and a spoilt mummy's boy.

He tries hard to hang on to his sword but even with the help of his trusty knights does not quite manage it. Merlin, played by Kevin Batch, is a bumbling Brummie wizard who owes his dress sense to Roy Wood.

His magic does not always do the trick but somehow comes right in the end.

Included in the show are three witches, a slimey sludge lady, mad uncle and overbearing mother.

The music draws on popular songs with acapella choral work, rousing songs and classic rock and roll.

Director Fiona Morrison said: 'We always try to be a bit different at The Aldborough Players. There are some pretty wacky moments in this production but the bottom line is, it is fun family entertainment.'

The Aldborough Players celebrated its 21st birthday last year.

To mark the occasion it put on an updated version of its first ever pantomime Sally in Pantoland, based on the Alice in Wonderland plot.

The group, which has more than 60 members, has involved more than 300 people since it started in 1992.
