Diss is set to make its mark in the select world of film festivals this month, following in the footsteps of famous venues like Cannes, Venice and Edinburgh.

Diss Film Society will be hosting four evenings of highlights from British cinema - building on the success of its fortnightly shows in the town for almost four years, to audiences of more than 70.

Society chairman Brian Guthrie said: 'Our regular screenings at the Park Hotel have shown that there's a tremendous appetite here for films. The festival is a chance for people to enjoy a feast of British movies from 40 years of film-making. And it's a chance for us to explore a bigger venue, Diss Corn Hall.'

The films span the years from 1946 to 1985 and feature memorable performances by some of our greatest movie legends.

They are the Dickens classic Great Expectations, starring Alec Guinness and John Mills; The Entertainer, written by John Osborne, which has Laurence Olivier as a faded seaside comedian: Paul Scofield and Robert Shaw as the clashing Sir Thomas More and Henry VIII in A Man for all Seasons, and My Beautiful Launderett, with Daniel Day-Lewis confronting Thatcher's Britain in an often funny, cross-cultural love story.

The films will be screened over four nights, in the above order, on June 22 at the Park Hotel and 25, 26 and 27 June at the Corn Hall.

And in a bid to attract youngsters and families to the festival, under 18s get in free.

Tickets, priced 4 to non-society members, are available at the door or from Diss Information Centre, on 01379 668875, or email dissfilmsocieety@man.com
