Classical music made a comeback to Blickling Park with a bang. Concerts by the lakeside began with genteel picnic orchestras in 1992 before they evolved to pop and rock from a Chris de Burgh watershed six years later.

The soaring mezzo soprano voice of Katherine Jenkins took the venue back to its roots on Sunday night as an 8,000 strong crowd settled down with their chairs and champers to enjoy a varied programme of standards and opera including sneak previews of material from her new album out in the autumn.

Her singing was as sleek as the string of dresses worn by the Welsh woman with a warm line in patter that also won over the crowd.

Early on she dedicated a song to the people of tragedy hit Norway. At the end, backed by the 32-piece National Symphony Orchestra, it was a flag waving Last Night of the Proms finale reaching a fireworks crescendo.

The previous evening crowds braved colder conditions for a 1980s party headlined by Billy Ocean and at the weekend the Blickling series, which began with Roger Daltrey's rock opera Tommy on Friday night, rounds off with the nutty boys of Madness as the venue strives to serve up a menu of music to suit all tastes.
