It's a magical night-time adventure that leads you through an illuminated landscape set in one of Norfolk's best-known beauty spots – Thetford Forest.

The Electric Forest sees a familiar landscape transformed into a fairyland filled with lights, interactive illuminated play areas, trees which can be 'painted' with LED lighting and sound effects which include listening in to conversations between trees. Norwich-based street theatre company Stuff & Things, which specialises in creating entertaining soundscapes in unusual places, worked with The Electric Forest's producers Culture Creative to design 'the Listening Trees' which offers visitors the chance to learn more about the different tree species.

'At Stuff & Things we like trees so much that we've developed the technology that allows us to listen in on their secret lives,' said Paul Preston Mills, of Stuff & Things.

'Using the acoustic properties of living wood to carry sound vibrations, we transform individual trees into personal listening posts.'

The Electric Forest invites visitors to embark on a 1.5km walk which winds through huge Douglas firs, dense young pine plantations, silver birches, mature beech trees and Scots pine, all of which provide a variety of background atmospheres and architectures for lighting and soundscapes.

In its second year, this year's event has also received help from two local primary schools and families from RAF Mildenhall, who – with help from creative arts company Rojo Art – have created a light installation in the form of a magical flower canopy made from recycled plastic.

There are swings that, when in use, set off eclectic flashing fairylights, gongs you can hit which trigger trees in the forest to light up, a conversation between trees which sees them flash every shade of the rainbow, trees you can hug and while doing so listen in to their thoughts and a chance to join with your friends to paint Thetford Forest in light.

Beautiful, magical and very unusual, Electric Forest is at High Lodge on Thursday to Sunday and December 13 to December 16. Advance tickets are priced at 15.50 per adult, 10 for concessions and 41 for a family ticket (under fives are admitted free).
