MICHAEL DRAKE
The King of Hearts audience – full to the fireplace to see Taty Theo and Joanna Levine – were most impressd with yesterday's Italian Cello concert with Cervetto's Sonata No 2 in A minor. Very minor, and difficult to keep in tune, but containing an interesting cadenza in the opening movement.
The final musical offering of the autumn festival gave a pleasant insight into Italian Baroque music for cello with a little French and German colouring added by the two experienced and enthusiastic instrumentalists who had opened in spirited fashion with another name not in all reference books, Giuseppe Jacchini's Sonata Opus 3 No 10.
It was appropriate to include Vivaldi, who wrote largely for ladies, and after the doleful beginning to his Sonata No 4, progressed smoothly to the variations of tempi.
Telemann's D major Sonata was notable for two particularly joyful Allegro movements with Gabrielli Ricercar No 3 exploring what the instrument could do – including imitating the then-fashionable hurdy gurdy. Just a pity that the promised contemporary reading could not have been included in this delightful lunchtime interlude.
