Jekyll and Hyde

Marina Theatre, Lowestoft

This musical drama with orchestration, choreography and fluid scene changes was the biggest challenge yet for amateur dramatic group the Lowestoft Players.

Adapted for the stage by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn from Robert Louis Stephenson's novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the story follows the experiments of Dr Henry Jekyll (Stephen Amer), who is convinced he can separate good and evil and then eradicate the evil altogether.

He succeeds in concocting a drug transforming himself into his alter ego, the brutal Edward Hyde, who feels free to revel in all manner of bestial excesses.

Stephen Amer brings an amazing sincerity and superb acting ability to this difficult dual role. He is ably supported by John Marjoram as John Utterson the lawyer, Polly Woodward as Jekyll's fiancé, Emma Carew, and Nicci Snell as the prostitute Lucy Harris.

Woodward and Snell put in high-quality performances backed by the rest of the cast with excellent direction from Stephen Wilson and Shirley Hurren in a production backed by a first-rate 17-piece orchestra under the musical direction of Mike West.
