COLIN WILSON

Idlewild, featuring Roddy Woomble (vocals), Rod Jones (guitar), Allan Stewart (guitar), Gareth Russell (bass) and Colin Newton (drums) call in at UEA, Norwich, on Wednesday night in support of their latest album (their sixth), Make Another World.

The group released their first single in 1997 on their own label and have gone on to enjoy 12 top 40 singles over the last decade.

Over the years albums such as 100 Broken Windows, The Remote Part and Warnings/Promises (their last for Parlophone) have brought chart success, huge critical acclaim and prestigious slots with the Rolling Stones, REM, Coldplay and Pearl Jam.

The new album, released on their new label Sequel, is an album of stripped-back rock that is as brutal as it is tender, as intimate as it is expansive which was not so prevalent on 2005's Warnings/Promises album, but certainly familiar to anybody with a knowledge of the bands full catalogue.

Roddy says: “Warnings/Promises had a real warm sound to it and was almost laid-back for us, whereas this is the opposite of that. We've never been interested in repeating ourselves.

This one is short, sharp songs that say everything they want to say very quickly, often with guitars. It's definitely a bit more savage sounding.”

This 11-date UK tour will see Idlewild playing songs from the new album, including the latest single, No Emotion, as well as songs from their extensive back catalogue.

Support comes from Saddle Creek four-piece Now It's Overhead who will be performing songs from their recently-acclaimed Dark Light Daybreak album. It's a rare opportunity to see the US band perform from a captivating body of work that, in the past, has seen contributions from REM's Michael Stripe and Bright Eye's Conor Oberst.

Variously described as psychedelic, atmospheric, wayward indie rock - and often compared to the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, the Cure and My Bloody Valentine - such indie-credible adjectives and comparisons do little justice to frontman Andy LeMaster's off-the-beaten-track vocals and compositions.

Doors 7.30pm. Tickets at £16 advance are available in Norwich from UEA Union, Waterfront and Soundclash, or from the UEA box office on 01603 508050 or www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk
