A Norwich father-of-six has said he is enjoying the 'best payday of my life' after beating 570,000 to one odds and scooping £57,000 - off a £1.70 bet.

Alan Clarke, 57, won £57,268 off the modest horse racing bet after selecting four outsiders at Betfred on Aylsham Road - where he has been a regular customer for 10 years - on Thursday.

The courier - nicknamed MJ, after Michael Jackson, thanks to his black curly hair - will now renew his long-expired passport before enjoying breaks to Mexico and America.

He said as the results of the Market Rasen and Wincanton accumulator came in, he was 'shaking with excitement'.

And as he used Betfred's happy hour promotion, his prize money was almost £26,000 more than it would have been.

'I'm a shrewd punter and knew I had to wait to ensure I was within happy hour at the shop,' he said. 'I followed the results on my mobile phone yesterday afternoon and when the fourth horse came home I jumped up and started pacing around my home.

'It's the best pay day of my life and I can't wait to get celebrating. Christmas has come very early indeed.'

The grandfather-of-11 said he won £8,000 in the 1990s, but had never scooped a 'life-changing' amount - and added that he had to calm down with a cup of coffee.

Next, he'll be making a trip to the post office.

'My passport has long expired so I will be getting a new one and then I'm off to Mexico and next up the United States,' he said. 'It really hasn't sunk in yet. I will also be able to replace the fridge freezer and get a new car, one that runs reasonably and is easy to maintain.'

His furthest venture abroad was to Belgium with a pub football team when he was 21.

Fred Done, Betfred owner, said: 'I bet it was a thriller for MJ when Emerald Rose got first past the post at 20/1.

'It is incredible that for such a small bet of £1.70 Alan has won himself £57,268. I hope this regular customer enjoys his new globe-trotting life.'
