Downham Town assistant Pete Brassett reckons his players set their benchmark on Saturday – and now he wants them to keep reaching it.

Town ended a four-game winless streak by hammering Debenham LC 4-1, thanks to goals from Matty Calvert, Matthew Castellan, Jordan Goult and Sam Hanslip.

Brassett, who now expects his Thurlow Nunn First Division outfit to find some consistency, said: 'What was pleasing from the boys was their focus from the outset. Sometimes we question whether every one of them is switched on come 3pm.

'But on Saturday there was a focus, people were believing in their ability, and they worked for each other. The lads were fizzing the ball about and I've got to say we deserved the win.

'We've got Saffron Walden at home on Saturday and they are a good side, so we will need to put in the same level of performance and show the same focus. If we can move the ball like we did at Debenham we will do well. We set the bar, and it was a high one at that.'

Lee Pearson, 16, may keep his place in goal after enjoying a 'superb' debut in place of unavailable number one Lee Brooks. The teenager saved a penalty and joined midfielder Zak Merrishaw, also 16, in making an impressive senior football bow.

In other news, Nathan Kennedy has quit as the club's reserve team boss due to personal issues. Interested parties should contact Brassett on 07932087324.

Elsewhere, Swaffham Town slipped to their second away First Division defeat on the bounce at Long Melford. Red-hot striker Joe Jackson scored in his side's 2-1 defeat.

Paul Hunt's Pedlars were not helped by centre-back Lee Woolmore's absence through a hip injury and Dean Miller coming off with his team 1-0 up, due to a shoulder problem.

'It's been a real blow to lose three of our four centre-backs (Jonny George is also out), especially as Dean and Lee have been outstanding together,' said Hunt.

'Our pitch isn't great but theirs is the worst in the league. But we kept trying to play football and we couldn't because the ball was bouncing up to hip height. We should have mixed it up a bit. We need to learn to play ugly.'

Hunt said one 'bright spot' from the defeat was the debut of left-sided youngster Loui Hockton. Woolmore will miss the visit of table-topping Cambridge University Press at the weekend and Tuesday's trip to Great Yarmouth Town. Miller's doubtful while striker Rory Harper may return after missing the Melford game through work commitments.

In the Premier Division a Dubi Ogbonna hat-trick helped high-flying Wisbech Town win 3-2 at Gorleston. The Fenmen host Stanway on Saturday. Peterborough Division One King's Lynn Town Reserves visit Maccasports with new signing, experienced keeper Kevin Cross, returning to the club to cover for suspended shot-stopper Jack Johnson.

• Downham, Wisbech and Swaffham were all in League Cup action on Tuesday. Downham lost 6-0 at Premier Division Ely while Swaffham beat Fakenham 2-1 thanks to goals from Jackson and Jack Redhead. Wisbech beat March 4-0. Toby Ogbonna (2), Lewis Clayton and Matt Lunn netted.
