Swaffham Town boss Paul Hunt admitted Alex Vincent's horror injury took the gloss off his side's victory over previously unbeaten Braintree Town Reserves on Saturday.

The Pedlars moved up to third in the Thurlow Nunn First Division by winning 3-1 at Shoemakers Lane to secure their fourth victory in five games.

Goals from Rory Harper, Joe Jackson and Vincent clinched the win, but it was the latter's sickening blow to the head – after contesting a 50/50 ball with Braintree's goalkeeper which left him unconscious – which cast a shadow over their triumph.

Hunt said: 'It's always a big worry when someone gets knocked unconscious and then comes back round as you never know how they will be. Thankfully Graham Moore (physio) took control and was a real credit.

'The lads were worried about Vinnie so they did well to see the game out. It took the celebratory mood off a good win, but the main thing is he was released from hospital later that night and in good spirits.'

Hunt says he will take 'no chances' over Vincent if he's not feeling ready to play at Brightlingsea Regent at the weekend. Richard Cornall and Dwyane Stockton could be involved for in-form Swaffham.

Downham, who lost 3-0 at Whitton thanks to two late goals, are without a game until they host Fakenham Town in a First Division derby on Tuesday.

Assistant manager Pete Brassett said: 'We played really well first half and maybe should have taken a few of our chances. We defended well, but got done by a great goal, and then two on the counter while we were trying to get back into the game.'

Wisbech, who host Kettering in the FA Cup on Saturday, lost 2-1 at Brantham. Debutant Kryan Stannard (2) and Luis Duarte scored as Lynn Reserves, who host Ryhall at the weekend (2pm), beat Holbeach Reserves 3-1. Keeper Jack Johnson was sent off.
