The surge in water temperatures continued to see river fish spawning well and this week at Ellingham's most pristine pool, it was 30 chub between 2lbs and 4lbs that at low tide hugged the gravels, flashing their flanks to deposit their eggs.

Diss postman and painter Peter Jackson, with his brother on a Source to the Sea Canoe survey over the last week, observed some depressing sights. However, they were elated to indisputably watch two wild trout of nearly 2lbs below Homersfield and see substantial numbers of brilliantly blue, flashing Kingfishers.

Beauty may well be in the eye of the beholder, but there is little better to grace the bottom of Bungay Common which may be walked around and is a pleasure for fish spotting at the moment.

This wonderful stretch comes with the Bungay Cherry Tree Angling Club card, available from almost all the tackle shops, Crossways at Ellingham, and the Outney Caravan Site, with treasurer Colyn Taylor reporting they are selling well.

Many still waters saw activity too and a good hatch all round looks to bode well for the future. Plenty of carp were taking the pellet and as anglers offered their selected flavours and design, up in the water, and on the surface, offerings hooked with the tiny rubber bands became more and more effective.

At Marsh Trail Lakes in A Pit even tench of 2lb were taken this way.

The Cherry Tree Lay-by Pit zoomed into form, with Colyn Taylor producing the best winning bag to date of 35lb 8oz of bream to 8lb on the tip.

• An interesting and informative presentation by Will Akast of the Environment Agency covered the Water Frame Work Directive for which he is the responsible Officer, and what it holds for the Broads Rivers Area.

With thousands of pounds dedicated to a continued improvement of our rivers by 2027, although a long way off, the ball, is starting to roll and there are hopes to improve the official recorded status.

Good news is that a handsome amount is specifically dedicated on to our needy doorsteps. Whilst the majority of running water is termed, 'moderate', alongside 'poor', it does mean that 86pc of Broadland Rivers are not 'good quality and ecological status'.
