WAVENEY VALLEY: The Suffolk County AAA Pairs match saw the Harleston AC Club and Middle Pits fish well overall.

Bungay Cherry Tree AC Star Justin Hunt had top individual bag from the Club Pit with 53lb 3oz, but his luckless partner blanked in the Middle Pit on the feeder.

That left runner-up Alan Winterton with 50lb 8oz to win the Pairs with partner Alan Nobbs of Bungay for a total weight of 61lb 4oz.

For the last fling of the river season Nigel Scarle of Earsham took himself off to Beccles road bridge fishing downstream on the yacht station side, selecting a spot at end of the gravel. With the majority of fish having abandoned the Quay Marina he took 35lb of skimmers in a great spree.

The swings in water temperature did not always see the Waveney perform consistently on the tidal areas and the ice covering both the Quay and the main river at times left fish seemingly confused and edgy when the predators of both fur and feather could get at them.

The upper river's season analysis has to be the popularity of the chub and dace fishing and the number of successful bags and individual fish taken. With big bends and deep holes plummeting in popularity, the faster running shallows coming out of them have produced some of the best fishing.
