A tough cool headwind over the final miles slowed riders in the Diss CC 25 mile time trials on the Diss-Thetford road.

After a misty start the weather improved, but it was not until the last competitors were finishing that the sun broke through.

In the classic bike event, David Staff, who last year beat 2010 winner Martin Pyne by a narrow margin, this time beat Pyne 1-04:11 to 1-06:46, both riding 1970s bikes.

An eye-catcher was the fifth-placed machine, a 16-inch-wheeled Moulton equipped with close-ratio hub gear in the style of John Woodburn's 1962 London-Cardiff record breaking machine. This was ridden to sixth place by Ken Baker of Colchester Rovers in 1-11:48. David Staff was also best on the new veterans age-standard.

The winner of the last event of the morning, the Medium Gear 25, for bikes of any age but restricted to a 72-inch gear, was also from the Colchester club. Rik Laws, whose parents live in Norfolk, won in 1-03:28 ahead of North Elmham man Geoff Frost (Velo Velocity, 1-05:14).

Most of the machines in the tricycle 25 would have easily qualified as classics, with the most striking a 1961 Jack Taylor with two wheels at the front and classic Jack Taylor box-lined finish, which Cally Callomon of Walpole propelled round in a leisurely 1-53:40.

Head and shoulders ahead of the rest in speed was winner Chris Hutchinson (Redbridge CC, 1-11:34). n Mark Arnold (Team Pedal Revolution) won the Plomesgate 10 on the sporting Sudbourne-Tunstall course near the Suffolk coast. On a glorious sunny afternoon with little wind he finished in 21:54, ahead of Glenn Taylor (Shorter Rochford, 22:56) and Andre Dyason (Team Swift, 23:06). Dyason was also Best on Age-Standard. Making a welcome return to racing in fourth place was Steve Gorbutt (Diss CC, 23:37).

• Cromer rider Matthew Hicks (Strada Sport) was 14th and best-placed local rider in the weekend's Eastern Road Race League event, run by Braintree Velo. Winner was Colin Bailey (North Road CC).

• Several local mountain bikers raced in the first round of the National XC MTB Series at Sherwood Pines in Nottinghamshire. Sara Flatt (Thetford MTB) had a notable win in the Female Grand Vets. Iceni Velo members racing in the Masters category included Shaun Aldous in sixth Darren Evans (15th) and Glenn Stanford (25th).
