Southwold maintained their superb start to the season with an emphatic win over a brave Newmarket side who travelled with just 15 players.

After a tight opening quarter the visitors had a scrum five metres from their own line and the Wold pack simply pushed them back over, with Ben Crick diving down on the ball. Their second came five minutes later from a quickly-taken penalty five metres out, with Adam Smith powering his way towards the line before offloading to Patrick Stevens who dived over the maul to touch down for a try which Luke Wade converted.

Newmarket then had their best spell and deservedly reduced the arrears with a converted try, but normal service was resumed when Joe Block made a strong break and offloaded to skipper James Hall who was simply not going to be stopped, with Wade's conversion making it 19-7 at half-time. Three minutes after the break Jacob English broke through the defence and fed the ball to Rob Owles to run in for Wold's bonus point try.

Wade narrowly missed the conversion but Wold were now beginning to pull clear and they quickly moved further ahead when the home pack won the ball from a scrum and Matt Howell simply smashed his way over the try line at inside centre, with Wade converting.

English then cut inside and made the break to feed Ritchie Thickett for another great try wide on the left which was superbly converted before Thickett cut back inside and fed Hall who in turn fed Dominic Hill to sidestep and force his way over.

The last 10 minutes saw brave Newmarket buckling and on their own scrum they were pushed back yet again on their line and the ball reached Howell who jogged in for his second try. A conversion from Wade off the post meant another seven points.

Three minutes from time the home forwards scored what they thought was a perfectly good try from a scrum five metres out only for the referee to award a penalty to Wold. The Southwold pack simply repeated the move, with Hill getting his second try.

Southwold remain a point ahead of Stowmarket who also made it five wins out of five by beating Wymondham 52-7. Tom Poole scored and converted the visitors' only try.
