Jamie Godbold says the current Lowestoft Town squad is the best he has seen in his time at the club.

The Blues winger has had a watching brief at Crown Meadow in recent weeks as he recovers from a broken jaw suffered against Potters Bar Town last month.

And the 29-year-old, who is also an FA Skills coach, believes the quality players brought into the team are helping to push the club up and up.

"This is my 10th year and it's the best squad I've seen, with the calibre of players we've got and are bringing to the club," Godbold, pictured, said.

"We're pulling them from further afield just because they want to play for Lowestoft Town. It's great for the town for the club to be doing so well.

"We just keep going up and up and for the foreseeable future I can't see us dipping.

"We've got a great squad of players, a great management team and chairman and the backing from sponsors is all in place for us to keep climbing."

Godbold has seen the Blues' lead at the top of the Ryman League Division One North table cut to six points in recent weeks, although Town have plenty of games in hand on their rivals.

But Godbold admits the team have perhaps not been as fluent in 2010 as they were before the turn of the year - and it is difficult for him to watch.

"I'm frustrated, particularly when the team aren't playing as well as they're capable of playing," he said.

"I look at it from a coaching point of view as well, so I'm not too bad really.

"I can help any individual players and say my piece to help them, when the time's right.

"I think the defeat against Ware was a bit of a wake-up call really to everyone concerned at the club, just to say you can't turn up and expect to win games, you need to put the work rate in and that's what's been said throughout the club.

"That's what the coaching staff keep banging on to us about."

When he recovers from his injury, Godbold is expecting a battle to return to the starting line-up of the champions-elect.

"It (the squad) seems to get bigger and better every week," he said.

"We all understand that the club are going up and up and that's just way football goes.

"The club is striving to keep everyone playing the best they can and players know if they're not playing well then they're out of the team.

"Although it's frustrating, it's probably quite healthy."

Godbold, who has played more than 400 games for the Blues, is hoping he can return to action within the next month after the injury suffered in the league on January 16.

"It's getting there slowly, which is really frustrating because I feel like I could do things, but it'd only take a knock to be back to square one again," he said.

"I'm training at the moment and no-one's allowed to tackle me - so I'm actually looking quite a good player in training!

"I've got probably about another three or four weeks before I'm back on the pitch.

"I knew straight away as soon as I'd done it. The physio tried to convince me otherwise that it was all in my head, but I knew straight away and I went to A and E and they confirmed it, that it was a break."

And he said his palate has suffered in the last month.

"I've been trying every flavour soup going for a bit of variety!" he said. "I'm eating more normally now, though."
