Boxing promoter Mervyn Turner says he intends to end the barren years and bring boxing back to Norfolk on a regular basis – and help local hopefuls make the grade.

Turner, as part of Shamrock Boxing Promotions, is behind the September 15 fight night at the Norfolk Showground, with Cromer's exciting Michael Walsh bidding for an International Masters title headlining the cast of local talent.

'I am so very pleased to be able to put this show on in Norfolk with such a great bunch of lads – there really is some great talent here,' he said.

'It's hard to believe that a county the size of Wales and with such a rich and proud history of boxing does not have professional shows on a regular basis.

'That is something that we hope to put right in the future.

'Some great boxers have come from these parts and there is a wealth of talent out there in clubs all across the county who deserve an opportunity.

'We aim to give them the chance to box in front of local people to build up their fan base and their careers.

'I am really looking forward to the show as it promises to be a great evening of boxing in front of some of the best fans in the country.'

The show has suffered one false start, with the original July date postponed because of an injury to the unbeaten Walsh's opponent, George Gochechiladze.

Michael's brother Ryan, the English champion, is the main support, taking on another Georgia's Mikel Gogebosvili over eight rounds with Nathan Dale, Scott Moises and Paul Davis also flying the local flag.

Most of the boxers on show are under the wing of Norwich trainer Graham Everett, who is backing Turner's plans.

'With one or two exceptions you could not get a better line-up for a local show if you tried and I think there are some real good match-ups on the bill which will give the fans a real treat,' he said.

'Of course Michael's fight will always be exciting because that is just how he is, so I know the fans are in for a real treat.

'It's great to have a local show, not just for the boxers but for the loyal fans who travel up and down the country supporting these Norfolk boys.

'We need more shows like this in Norfolk which I am sure will be well supported. I know Mervyn at Shamrock Boxing Promotions has plans to hold shows here on a regular basis, which can only be good for everyone.'
