Jason Turner and Alex Street stole the headlines as a heroic display from King's Lynn Town saw them knock higher-level Barwell out of the FA Trophy.

Keeper Street saved Jamie Towers' first-half penalty - and then his re-taken spot-kick after Lynn's goalie was deemed to have come off his line to make the save - to keep the Linnets level.

And Turner reaped the rewards by cooly rounding the advancing Barwell keeping Liam Castle to roll the ball home from a tight angle from the edge of the box to seal Lynn's passage into the next round.

It was the frontman's fourth goal of the season, but his first from open play, and gave the Linnets a deserved victory for a monstrous display against Jimmy Ginnelly's side.

Gary Setchell made three changes from the team that picked up their third victory on the bounce at Mickleover Sports on Saturday.

Two of them were forced upon him with new goalkeeper Danny Gay cup-tied, after playing in the competition for AFC Sudbury earlier this year, and Jason Lee struggling with a bad ankle.

They were replaced by former number one Street and youngster Ryan Fryatt who slotted in at centre-half alongside Phil Gulliver. Rob Hughes was the other player to drop to the bench with striker Turner being preferred as Setchell went 4-4-2 and paired him up top with Russell Dunkley.

Barwell went into the game as favourites given their fine early-season form and the fact they play one level higher than the Linnets.

And the Step Three club started the game brightly with front pair Luke Barlone and Towers linking well with the latter bursting through, only to be stopped by a bright and alert Street.

The Six-foot plus Towers nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute as he rose highest to power Paul Spacey's corner towards goal. However, Jamie Thurlbourne jumped equally impressively to nod off the line as he guarded his back post to save a certain goal.

And it was Towers again who spurned two even-better opportunities during a 180 seconds of drama after Barwell were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute.

The frontman picked himself up off the ground after being upended by Fryatt but saw his spot kick saved excellently by Street. However, Lynn's former number one was adjudged to have come off his line to save the effort and had to face Towers again after a re-take was ordered.

The Canaries' number seven went to his right, again, and Street - who until last week was Setchell's main man in goal - guessed right to save it again.

The moment lifted noise levels around the ground and the Linnets, who had scrapped but struggled to gain any supremacy, nearly made Towers' pay in the 25th minute.

Jordan Yong's fine run and centre was pushed away from Dunkley by visiting keeper Castle. However, the ball dropped to Dan Quigley who looked to have found the net until Mark Albrighton - like Thurlbourne had done earlier - cleared off his goal line.

Steve Spriggs pulled a decent attempt wide from the edge of the box, following good work from Turner, with his weaker left foot as Setchell's men's confidence grew. But higher-level Barwell still posed a huge threat going forward.

And it was that man Towers, playing up front rather than out wide where he often does, again who nearly put the Leicestershire outfit in front. Yet Street - who looked a man on a mission after being replaced by Gay last week - watched his rash effort fly comfortably safe over his bar.

A moment of magic from Thurlbourne nearly unlocked the deadlock as the game motored towards the break, but his 30-yard free-kick was saved expertly by Castle to his left.

Yet after another action-packed half of football at The Walks, the sides went into their respective dressing rooms with the game all square at the break.

Both teams hustled and harried in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, but to little avail, as some fine defensive displays from notably Yong and Albrighton helped keep the score at 0-0.

It looked like something special was going to be needed to put the ball in the back of the net, and prevent a replay on Tuesday, and it nearly came just before the hour mark.

Thurlbourne's delightful left foot caressed a well-placed free kick around and over the wall and past Castle - but unfortunately straight into the post.

But The Walks faithful, and Setchell, would have been pleased with their team as Lynn's improved form in the game continued as they started to take control of proceedings.

Richard Bunting fizzed an effort wide as the men in yellow poured forward in search of an opener. And they soon found it when Turner made their pressure count by rounding Castle to slot home calmly.

Towers' deft chip nearly pulled his side level, as did Scott Lower's deflected effort, but Setchell's men defended heroically as they continued to put in a monumental shift against their highly-rated opponents.

Substitute Jamie Forshaw nearly wrapped it up for Lynn but his shot was headed off the line by the outstanding Albrighton - making his second goal-line clearance of the day.

But Setchell's brave Linnets were not made to pay as they secured the clean sheet they deserved, and the victory, on the reformed club's first match in the Trophy.
