Starting the day running were a selection of novice classes. In novice section K Jodie Amos and One of a Kind II claimed victory, with last year's CIC** winner Kitty King in second on Creevagh Cooley.

In section L, Laura Hill claimed top honours with Simon Grieve in a close second, and in the Open Novice Lucy Jackson took the win with Wiltshire rider Oliver Smith on his own Randolph taking second.

Local girl Sarah Wales from Downham Market came a respectable fifth in novice section L on chance ride Bally Mayo. Sarah picked up the ride only a week ago when regular rider Lucy Macewan broke her collar bone in a fall. She said: 'He was very solid and consistent in all three phases, but I didn't go flat out on the cross-country as I wanted an educational round for him for when Lucy is back eventing.'

In the Advanced class it was the Australian Andrew Hoy and Cheeky Calimbo who clinched victory with Nicky Roncoroni and the relatively inexperienced advance horse Watts Burn in second. He said: 'This was his first advanced run so the course asked enough strong questions with plenty of skinnies, but he answered every question and was very focused and straight. We now hope to gain mileage at CIC3* this season, with an aim for Boekelo at the end of the season.'

In the International classes Gemma Tattersall and Quicklook lead the CIC** and eventing legends Sir Mark Todd and Pippa Funnell hold the top spots in the CIC*** sections. Norfolk raised Kelly Aldous and her long-time partner High Garth High Flyer performed a fantastic test and are hot on Pippa's heels. The unfolding events of today will determine whether they can capitalise on a great start.
