Thankfully after some very wet recent weather, the Evening News & Copy IT Norwich and District Sunday league resumed after the festive break.

Premier Division leaders Norman Wanderers got 2014 off to a winning start as they scored five (Sammy Gauntlet 2, Colin Wynes 2, Danny Brown) at home to Norwich Busmen in a victory that keeps them three points clear of AFC Wanderers, who were 2-1 winners at Doghouse. I saw this game, and a good one it was.

Despite a bright start the home side went behind after 15 minutes when a well-worked AFC move put Charlie Bartrum in to score with a good finish. Bartrum doubled his tally 10 minutes later with a cool finish, as the visitors looked fairly comfortable, but a goal from Scott Woodgate on the stroke of half-time set up a good second half where both sides had plenty of chances that they failed to take. AFC will be pleased with the victory in a game well handled by Nigel Howes.

Sprowston Rovers carried their good December form into the new year as they won 3-1 (Sean Sandell 2, OG) at Windmill Wanderers.

In 1A, the big game was at Rackheath where leaders Riverside Rovers took on Mad Moose. An early goal by makeshift centre back Scott Gray put the home side ahead before Tom Swabey levelled from the spot for Moose. That's how it remained until the last minute when Gray added his second and what proved to be the winner. A 6-0 win at DCS Rapid has seen Dussindale Rovers creep quietly into second spot. Tom Cullabine grabbed a hat-trick and there were goals for Simon Durrant, Paul Durrant and Ollie Ford as Rovers started they New Year in fine fashion.

Norman Wanderers Res went down 3-1 at home to Horsford Utd, whose goals came from Callum Cooper, Shaun Plant and a 30-yard rocket from Scott Lindsey.

Goals by Billy Lake and Ryan Mortimer helped Aslacton to a 2-1 win over Dancing Farmers in a game where Alex Hunton scored for the visitors and referee Matt Carpenter received praise. In the battle of the bottom two, Vale Longo went down 5-1 at home to North Walsham Town.

McInerney treble helps Earlham comeback

A Marcus McInerney hat-trick and a goal for Darrell Wigger helped Earlham Utd come from two down to draw 4-4 at PL Rangers in Division 1B.

St Faiths scored six (Aaron Saddleton 4, Will Abbs, Robert Armes) at Ribs Rovers, while Acle Rangers Res won 2-0 at Unicorns.

Despite dropping two points after a 2-2 draw at The Cottage, Deopham remain top of 2A. Tom Bailey and Mike Parsons scored for Cottage whilst Lewis McKerrell and Olly Ramsbotham replied for the visitors.

Deopham lead by a point from Brooke FC who were 5-0 (Sam Page 2, Clark Robertson, Mark Jones) winners over Ketts Tavern Wizards.

Bungay Town remain third after thumping New Buckenham 7-2.

In 2B, Chris Hall 2, Elliot Lythgoe Kieran Delaney and Jake Imrie scored for leaders Schoolhouse in their 5-2 win over Moles Rest. Taverham Utd remain second after a 3-2 (Luke Pope, Stu Claxton, OG) win at One Love Utd.

West End get better of their nearest rivals

The top-of-the-table clash in 3A saw the positions remain unaltered as leaders Costessey West End ran out 3-1 winners at Temple Bar.

Micawbers Tavern beat Dilham Cross Keys 5-1 whilst Bungay Town Res continue to rise after a 3-2 victory at Sporting Longdale Res.

Newsman Celtic made it four games unbeaten as they overcame Brooke FC Res 4-1. Jack Sinclair 2, Mike Shaw and Chris Durrant scored for Celtic, who were also full of praise for the performance of referee Brian Applegate.

In 3B, leaders Lakewood Utd scored seven without reply at home to Cellar House while second-placed Heroes Bar scored eight of the 13 goals scored in their game with Windmill Elite.

Mettingham stay fifth after their 2-0 (Iain Crawford, James Goodfellow) victory over Red Lion whilst Salhouse Rovers moved further away from the bottom as they beat Locksley Ath 3-2, with goals coming from Jamie Steer 2, and James Smith

In Division Four, Theo Chamberlain grabbed a second-half equaliser for leaders Mischief FC as they drew 1-1 at Binham Village. Silver Fox are in fifth spot after scoring seven without reply against Briston Wanderers Res. Victor Larke, Luke Gould and Jason Lambert all grabbed a couple, whilst Michael Hurst also scored.

The only game in the Under 19s saw Hethersett Athletic win by the odd goal of five at Beccles Caxton.
