Norwich City's out-of-favour defender Steven Whittaker is resigned to moving on from Carrow Road in the summer.

The Scottish international played his first senior football since October in his country's 1-0 friendly win at Hampden Park last week after falling down the pecking order under Alex Neil.

Whittaker's last Premier League appearance for the Canaries' came in the 6-2 top flight defeat at Newcastle and the 31-year-old is keen to get his club career back on track.

'Next season I will probably move on. I want to play football again. This is the first spell in my career where I've not played, not even got a strip. It's been five months maybe that I've not played. I've sometimes been on the bench but I've not played,' he said. 'I've had a taste of what that's like and it's not nice. You train every week and want something to focus on at the weekend. That will come into my thinking.'

Whittaker, speaking to the Scottish Herald, was grateful to be part of Gordon Strachan's set-up.

'The gaffer has always been fair that way,' he said. If you come away and train hard and well, he has faith in the boys to go and do a job. I turn 32 in the summer so I'll have a whole season at 32 and I want to play on as long as I can. I still feel fine during the matches – all I'm lacking is a bit of match practice.'
