Dramatic defeat at Leeds may have been painful but it has made Norwich City defender Ryan Bennett even more determined to earn Championship promotion.

The Canaries allowed a 2-1 lead to slip in extra-time at a vociferous Elland Road last night, before losing 3-2 on penalties in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

However, captain for the night Bennett is looking to shake of the disappointment quickly ahead of Saturday's return to league action at Brighton.

'It's obviously hard to take, we dominated large parts of the game but unfortunately for us it didn't end well with the result and the penalties were disappointing as well,' the disappointed centre-back said.

'But we didn't see the game out so we can just concentrate on the league now and that's what we need to do, to get back to the basics, back to the training field and make sure we get promoted.'

Goals from Alex Pritchard and Nelson Oliveira had set City on course to progress to the quarter-finals but it wasn't to be.

'We always take this cup seriously,' Bennett added. 'I think you can see that from the team we put out and I did think we dominated the game for large parts but unfortunately it didn't work out well for us.'

One of the bright spots for the Canaries during the 2-2 draw, which was 1-1 at the end of normal time, was the performance of rising midfield prospect Louis Thompson.

'He's a good player and he's been involved of late, he's just starting to show what we all knew,' Bennett said of Thompson.

'He's been here a couple of years now and every time he's trained with us and been around us he's been very good, so it's good for him that he's taken his chance.'
