Norwich City will host League Two side Swindon Town at Carrow Road in the first round of the League Cup.

The Robins have been relegated from League One after winning just 12 of their 46 games. The tie will be played in the week commencing Monday, August 7.

The draw for the competition, to be known as the Carabao Cup as part of a new sponsorship deal with the Thai energy drink brand, was made in Bangkok this lunchtime.

City were one of the seeds for the southern section, with 70 clubs going into the hat, with Championship new boys Hull and Middlesbrough joining with the Premier League clubs in the second round.

The regionalised draw meant City would be against one of: AFC Wimbledon, Barnet, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Colchester, Crawley, Exeter, Forest Green, Gillingham, Luton, Newport County, Northampton, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Stevenage, Swindon, Wycombe Wanderers or Yeovil Town.

It is Swindon the Canaries will face though, who they have never played in the League Cup before. The last time the sides met was in March 2010 in League One, in a 1-1 draw at the County Ground, when Gordon Greer scored a late equaliser for the hosts to cancel out Grant Holt's opener.

City players Jacob Murphy and Harry Toffolo have both spent time on loan at Swindon previously, as did Alex Pritchard when he was a Tottenham player, while Louis Thompson was signed from the Wiltshire club in 2015 and spent time back there on loan following the move.

Former Norwich striker Lee Power is Swindon's chairman and former City midfielder Tim Sherwood had been the Robins' director of football until he was relieved of his duties earlier this week.

It will be the first time the Canaries have entered the competition – which they won in 1962 and 1985 – in the first round since the 2010-11 season, when Paul Lambert's side won 4-1 at home to Gillingham thanks to braces from Grant Holt and Chris Martin.

Last season City impressively won 2-0 at Everton to progress to the fourth round, before losing on penalties at Leeds after a 2-2 draw, with Pritchard, Steven Naismith and Robbie Brady seeing their efforts saved by Marco Silvestri in a 3-2 shootout loss.
