Born in Wednesbury in the West Midlands on June 30, 1880, 'Billy' Bushell played for Cannock Town, Aston Villa, Dudley Town and Wellingborough, before signing for Norwich on May 4, 1905.
He became part of a half back line which also included Archie Livingstone and Fred Bemment, from Lowestoft.
Bushell was a member of the City team for their first ever match in the Southern League – at Plymouth on Saturday, September 2, 1905. City were beaten 2-0. But the drama had come the day before on board the train to London. The journey was going well until the train shuddered to a halt at Witham Station. Some passengers, including players, got off the train to see what had happened and saw the train had crashed into a platform: nine people lost their lives, with players joining in the rescue operation.
Bushell left City for Luton in 1910 and died in 1964.
