59 Charles Dennington

209 appearances/0 goals

Charles Dennington is another of the rarities on the top 100 list – a goalkeeper.

Born in Beccles in October, 1899, Dennington played for his hometown club before joining Norwich in August, 1922, as an amateur.

Dennington became professional in May the following year. He was known to have a considerable physical presence, able to deal with opposing forwards with as much vigour as necessary – and then some.

In five seasons he missed just 20 league games and became the first Norwich City goalkeeper to make more than 100 appearances for the club.

After leaving Norwich – it was said for 'intemperate habits' – he headed for Bradford, in 1929, before coming 'home'. He played as an amateur, joining Kirkley in 1930. He then moved back to Beccles before returning to Kirkley two years later, finishing his career at Gorleston.
