Alex Neil confirmed after watching his side's 3-0 friendly win at Peterborough the 30-year-old is poised for another lengthy lay-off after missing two-and-a-half months last season with the same knee ligament damage.

'It didn't fully recover from last season if we are being honest,' said Neil. 'He had two or three injections over the summer to settle it down and the response wasn't great. They just had to fix it. Either it was surgery or we hoped it would heal itself. Surgery is always the last option. He was out two or three months last time and it is not going to be too dissimilar.

'It is the knee he injured last season. He has underwent an operation so he is going to be out for a length of time. '

Neil also confirmed he is in the market for a new keeper as well this summer with back-up option Jake Kean poised to join Sheffield Wednesday over the next few days. Kean was reportedly at the Owls' latest pre-season friendly on Saturday ahead of a potential switch to Hillsborough.

Neil has only John Ruddy and Declan Rudd on the books as senior options following Remi Matthews' season-long loan switch to Hamilton, but the Scot is confidently of resolving that situation.

'Yes, I think Jake might be joining them over the next day or so,' he said. 'It won't leave us light even though we have let Remi (Matthews) go out to join Hamilton. I will soon resolve that situation. I am hopeful of doing something and other things are moving. We are trying to be as active as we can. I am currently working on a lot of things.'

Neil did downplay weekend speculation touting Russell Martin with a return to Brighton and a firm move for Blackburn's Grant Hanley. Martin has missed the opening two pre-season outings with a back spasm but is expected to travel as part of the club's Austrian touring party, which departs on Sunday.

'Russell has got a spasm in his back. It shouldn't take too long,' he said. 'As far as the Brighton rumours my knowledge is as good as yours. As far as I am aware they only started in the last day or two and I don't know where from. We certainly haven't started them.

'I haven't made Russell available to anyone. He is recovering from a back spasm. He is coming to Austria and we hope he will be ready for the first game on Wednesday.

'Regards that (Hanley) is speculation. There is nothing in that link.'
