Norwich City have lodged an FA appeal to overturn Jonny Howson's red card from Saturday's 2-1 Championship win at Bournemouth.

An independent FA panel is now expected to rule on whether the midfielder's three-game ban should be rescinded to make him available for this weekend's league game against Cardiff City at Carrow Road.

A decision is likely within the next 24 hours once the independent regulatory commission have viewed footage of the incident which saw Howson dismissed in the 64th minute at the Goldsands Stadium by referee Chris Foy following his tackle on Cherries' substitute Yann Kermorgant. The 26-year-old appeared to win the ball cleanly with his right leg but tipped up Kermorgant with his trailing left leg.

New City boss Alex Neil suggested Norwich would look to launch an appeal immediately after the victory, having watched the incident from his seat in the directors' box.

'I thought it was really harsh,' said Neil, in his post-match media briefing. 'I was right in line with it and I thought Jonny (Howson) got the ball really clean but obviously the referee had a different angle to me and chose to send him off but we'll have a look at the video and have a look at it. Potentially we might appeal. At first glance on the video it didn't look like a sending-off so we'll get our guys to have a look and go from there.'

Cherris' counterpart Eddie Howe conceded Foy's decision to send off Howson was a tough call from the official.

'In terms of the sending-off, I didn't think it was a great tackle. Whether it was a red card or not is a tough one,' he said. 'I didn't think it was particularly dangerous but that was only my view at the time. I haven't seen it again. It was tough but the referee from our perspective managed the game quite well.'

If the FA panel uphold Foy's original decision then Howson will be forced to sit out the upcoming Championship games against the Bluebirds, Brentford and the trip to Birmingham on January 31.

Howson has scored three goals in 18 appearances for the Canaries this season since returning from a knee ligament injury suffered in the pre-season friendly against SC Bastia in France.
