Remi Matthews kept his seventh clean sheet of the season as the Norwich City loanee helped continue Plymouth Argyle's remarkable revival in League One.

The Pilgrims were rock bottom and six points from safety when the 23-year-old keeper initially joined on an emergency loan in late October but has since played a key part in their rise to 11th and within seven points of the play-offs – after a 2-0 home win over title chasers Blackburn.

Elsewhere in the third tier, Carlton Morris and Ben Godfrey both started as Shrewsbury won 2-1 at Bristol Rovers to move back up to second place, with striker Morris volleying wide from close range in the first half.

In the Championship, winger Yanic Wildschut headed a good chance over in the first half as he played the opening 55 minutes of Cardiff's 4-1 win at Leeds, to keep their automatic promotion hopes on track.

Up in Scotland, Kenny McLean helped Aberdeen reduce the gap to leaders Celtic to eight points – who lost 1-0 at Kilmarnock – when his shot was blocked but Niall McGinn followed up to seal a 3-0 home win over Hamilton, playing the full game.

Russell Martin and Rangers missed out on a chance to close on Celtic as they were beaten 2-1 at Hibernian, with home defender Ryan Porteous denying the on-loan Canaries defender a late equaliser with a heroic block.

Steven Naismith also played the full 90 minutes as Hearts won 1-0 at home to St Johnstone but is still searching for his first goal, after four appearances.

Back in England, midfielder Adam Phillips played the opening 67 minutes as Cambridge United lost 2-0 at Yeovil in League Two, making his third start for the U's.

Elsewhere in the fourth tier, Diallang Jaiyesimi was a late substitute as Grimsby were held 1-1 at home by Cheltenham and keeper Paul Jones was again an unused substitute as Exeter lost 1-0 at Luton.

On Friday night Todd Cantwell made his debut in the Dutch second tier for Fortuna Sittard, coming on in the 63rd minute with his team already 2-0 down at Volendam, which is how it finished. While in Germany on Sunday, Marcel Franke played all of a 2-0 home win over Bochum in Bundesliga II.

In non-league, Michee Efete helped Torquay move off the bottom of the National League with a 3-1 home win over Barrow – and City legend Grant Holt – and Ebou Adams helped Leyton Orient move into round four of the FA Trophy with a 4-3 win at Dover.
