Greek midfielder Savvas Mourgos reminded Norwich U23s boss Matt Gill of City legend Wes Hoolahan during his match-winning display at West Brom.

The former Arsenal trainee made his fifth appearance since returning from October ankle surgery as the Canaries' development squad won 2-0 away to West Brom.

The 19-year-old scored twice in the first half at Aggborough Stadium on Monday night, the home of Kidderminster Harriers, to seal a win which kept City seventh in Division Two of Premier League Two but to within a point of the play-off places.

Mourgos curled home a fine free-kick in the 24th minute and then finished at the second attempt after a low cross from Irish winger Simon Power seven minutes later – taking his tally to three goals in three games.

'I'm pleased for Savvas,' said U23s head coach Gill. 'He's come into the club and done excellently but had that nasty ankle injury. He's now back up to speed and I think everyone could see how good he is.

'He reminded me a bit of Wes Hoolahan. He played on the right but came inside and played as an extra number 10 in there. He caused them real problems and in general play, he has bags of talent. From dead-balls, he's shown a few times the quality he has.'

Gill had called for a more determined effort after a 2-0 defeat to Wolves at St George's Park left qualification from the Premier League Cup groups stages in the balance.

'It was a really pleasing performance, off the back of a real good week's training,' Gill added, speaking to City's official website. 'I said to the boys afterwards, they've got to recognise what got them a good performance.

'We had a real intensity in training this week and the platform was built from a really good team shape. The lads fought for each other.

'We had a real good work ethic which was fantastic to see. The individual quality that was mixed with it was really nice.'

City's U23s are due to return to action on Monday – at a venue yet to be confirmed – when they need to beat Bury in their final PL Cup group game, with Bournemouth a point behind them in Group C but with a game in hand.
