Norwich City loan signing David Carney has been called up to the Australia squad to face Japan in their World Cup qualifier next week.

The winger, who was signed from Sheffield United until the end of the season by Bryan Gunn on Wednesday, has made Socceroos head coach Pim Verbeek's 22-man squad for the game in Yokohama on February 11.

However, there is no place for City's other recent Australian recruit, Fulham defender Adrian Leijer.

Carney is one of nine England-based players in the squad, alongside Everton's Tim Cahill, West Ham's Lucas Neill and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Blackburn winger Brett Emerton will miss the game due to a knee ligament injury.
