Tim Krul revealed former Norwich City boss Chris Hughton played a part in him joining the Canaries.

The ex-Newcastle United keeper signed a two-year deal yesterday, after being released by Hughton's Premier League Brighton earlier this summer.

Krul was behind first choice Matt Ryan at the Seagulls but Hughton, who gave Krul his Magpies' debut back in 2009, urged him to go and prove his worth.

'Chris Hughton is top, top manager,' said the Dutch international. 'He said to me: 'You're not a number two, go back to playing and show people what you're capable of'.

'As a goalkeeper you have one position. Last year Matty Ryan had a pretty good season at Brighton and they brought me in to challenge him. He had a bit of a rough start but the moment I walked through the door, he had a blinder, but that's part and parcel of being a goalkeeper.'

Krul was rated one of the best in the Premier League during a stint at St James' Park that was cruelly halted by a serious knee injury. The experienced stopper aims to prove he can still cut it

The ex-Magpies trainee also knows what it takes to survive in the second tier.

'It's not going to be easy, it's a long season. I've had a season with Newcastle in the Championship so I know about it but it's exciting,' he said, speaking to the Canaries' official site.

'There are lots of big clubs in this league like Norwich – it's a massive club and it had plenty of years in Premier League.

'I've played a few times at Carrow Road with Newcastle and I've always really enjoyed playing there.

'It's got a good atmosphere and I heard a lot of season tickets have been sold so the support is there and that's really important.

'It's a long season and you need the fans to be behind us and with 21,000 season tickets already sold, it will be massive for us.'
