Timm Klose has spelt out what Norwich City must do against Ipswich Town - stand up or risk getting flattened.

Klose still shudders at the memory of his first derby tussle with Daryl Murphy last season, which proved a real eye opener to the intensity of the cross-border skirmish.

The Swiss international is ready for Mick McCarthy's men on Sunday at Carrow Road.

'If you want to be a pretty footballer against them you won't get far,' he said.

'That is what they like. They go after you, they hit you, they hurt you.

'My first derby against Murphy was a completely new experience for me. I didn't know that football before. It is their plan to do it that way on the pitch. We have to go out and deal with it.

'The couple of derbies I have played against them are always a struggle because they know exactly what to do in the Championship; to fight for the balls and the small metres on the pitch.

'Sometimes it is not pretty but it is effective. You need to go out, deal with it and not moan.

'Of course it is a different game. It is huge for the fans and for us.

'We know if we win then it can give us that push for the last few weeks and maybe still have one eye on the play-off spots.'

Klose was on the winning side at Portman Road earlier this season but places no store by Town's wretched run dating back to 2009.

'Every derby is a fresh game.

'You can be confident but not over-confident. They have nothing to lose,' he said.

'They lose again, they go, 'okay, we lost another one' but if they win it is a huge thing for them.

'As a football player you don't want to lose derbies.

'I haven't had the best experience of derbies when I played in Germany.

'At Nurnberg it was against Furth and I lost two and drew one, so that was not a good stat. Even at Wolfsburg when I played against (Eintracht) Braunschweig I lost one and drew one.

'You know what it means to the fans. You can give everyone a huge push if you win those games.'

Manchester City's on-loan attacker, Bersant Celina, could be the biggest threat for the visitors.

'We have some good players they need to look out for,' said Klose. 'Tom (Trybull) knows him from the Dutch league. He told me a little bit about him. It will be an interesting game.

'You want to compare yourself with the best players to raise your level.'
