Daniel Farke is urging Tottenham starlet Marcus Edwards to kick on after his first taste of league football.

Edwards’ long-awaited Norwich City debut came as a late substitute in Good Friday’s 2-0 Championship defeat to Fulham.

The teenager has responded well to tough love from Farke, who questioned his maturity and attitude without the ball when he first arrived from Spurs.

“I would prefer to give Marcus some minutes when we are winning the game,” said the City head coach.

“I got the feeling, ‘No, he deserved it because he has improved a lot in the training and this was a game to take the risk,’

“Fulham were leading 2-0, we had nothing to lose and I thought he had some good touches.

“It is important for him to have the first minutes in the Championship and hopefully it helps him to improve further on.”

Edwards featured for England’s U20s over the international break in his first competitive action since arriving on loan in January.

Spurs’ chief Mauricio Pochettino labelled the 19-year-old ‘Mini Messi’ after his progress through Tottenham’s academy, but Farke was critical of Edwards during the early part of his short term stint.

“His potential is so highly rated, one of the best in Europe. If he needs a bit longer then no problem. It is more a problem for him,” he said, shortly after the attacking midfielder’s arrival.

“Then he would return to Tottenham without any time on the pitch. We will give him all our support.

“He needs to learn a little bit more and he is more grown up in his attitude on the pitch and in his behaviour. It is up to him. We give him all the support and trust and then he must go through the door. We can’t carry him.”
